Is Cryotherapy Safe? Why CryoBuilt’s Electric Chambers Are the Safer Standard

As whole-body cryotherapy becomes more widely adopted in wellness centers, gyms, and recovery studios, it’s natural to ask: Is cryotherapy safe? Are there risks to cryotherapy? Can cryotherapy damage skin or nerves?

At CryoBuilt, these questions drive our innovation.

With over 10 million sessions completed safely and zero incident reports, CryoBuilt has redefined safety standards in the cryotherapy industry. Our 100% electric, nitrogen-free chambers are designed to give users peace of mind with every session—without compromising performance.

Understanding the Risks of Cryotherapy

While cryotherapy can offer impressive recovery benefits—like reduced inflammation, increased circulation, and faster muscle recovery—not all cryo is created equal.

Some cryotherapy systems, known as "cryo saunas," rely on liquid nitrogen to achieve ultra-cold temperatures. But nitrogen-based cryotherapy comes with potential hazards:

  • Oxygen displacement in confined areas

  • Risk of skin damage or frostbite with direct nitrogen exposure

  • In rare cases, nerve damage from extreme, uncontrolled cold

These risks highlight the importance of innovation, and that’s exactly where CryoBuilt leads.

Whole-Body Cryotherapy

Whole body electric cryotherapy is a treatment that involves exposing the body to temperatures as low as -165°F for 2 to 3.5 minutes in an electric chamber

Unlike nitrogen-based cryotherapy, your head is also inside the chamber, ensuring a uniform cold experience without the use of nitrogen.

Partial-Body Cryotherapy

A Cryo Sauna, in contrast, is a head-out nitrogen chamber where your body is exposed to extreme cold while your head remains outside.

These chambers rely on liquid nitrogen to cool the air, requiring your head to stay outside to avoid the risks of inhaling nitrogen, which can lead to respiratory issues and forced air burns.

Why Electric Cryotherapy is a Safer Choice

CryoBuilt’s chambers use chilled, breathable ambient air—not nitrogen—to cool the entire body, including the head and neck. This not only enhances the physiological response but also eliminates the most common risks associated with cryotherapy.

We take safety a step further with our fail-safe system, built directly into every chamber:

  • After each session, a safety timer is automatically triggered

  • Staff must confirm that the user has exited by pressing a button in the CryoBuilt app

  • If this isn’t done in time, the system responds immediately:

    • An alarm sounds

    • The entire system shuts down

    • Ambient air begins circulating into the chamber, gradually restoring it to a comfortable temperature

    • The chamber door automatically pops open, allowing for a swift and secure exit

This layered safety system ensures users can never exceed the recommended duration inside the chamber and are never exposed to uncontrolled temperatures.

Can Cryotherapy Damage Skin or Nerves?

With proper technology, no. CryoBuilt’s precisely calibrated, full-body electric system avoids the extremes that can lead to skin or nerve damage. By removing nitrogen and replacing it with breathable air, we’ve engineered a cryotherapy experience that’s powerful, safe, and trusted by professionals across the country.
